      Dictionary of Common Tibetan Personal and Place Names

      As editors-in-chief of this dictionary, Cheng Guansheng and An Caidan systematically provides readers the translated names of Tibetan people and places in Tibetan inhabited areas from Chinese into English. Having selected totally 10470 names of people and places, the dictionary also has attached an index of English, Chinese, and Tibetan names expressed in the Latin alphabet as appendix, occupying almost one third of the dictionary. In addition, the dictionary includes English translation of Tibetan family names and important historical figures' names, such as experts on literature, medicine, and translation; it also contains the names of important Kings and eminent monks in history. Moreover, the common titles, official titles, and titles of reincarnation lamas being bestowed by the central governments in history upon local Tibetans, are all illustrated in this dictionary. Place names include the current administrative and historical names of places in the Tibet Autonomous Region and Tibetan inhabited areas.       The Art and Culture of the Tibetan Plateau

      As the author, Ye Yuling has been working in TAR for 30 years (since 1961).       Studies on Eco-economical Demonstration Zone in Gannan of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

      Gannan is the grassland situated at the east edge of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau. It plays the roles of conserving water, defeating desertification, and preserving rich soil because its ecological system directly influences the lower reach of the Yangtze River and the Yellow River which, in fact, impacts on the sustainable development of the Chinese nation as a whole. Since August of 2002, a research team has conducted several field works in this area. Having worked together with the locals through consultations, interviews, and group discussions, the team has critically demonstrated the significance of ecological safety and the economic importance of this area. Team members drafted an effective plan in which mountain ranges are proposed to be isolated in order to encourage more trees growth while people properly developing side products. On systematically analyzing the different strategies for protection of grassland, such as forbidding grazing or periodically grazing, in order to upgrade the ecological environment and productivity of the grassland, the team also sketches out a practical plan for residents in Gannan to either settle down or migrate based on the ecological prerequisites. Finally, the team brings about comments and rational suggestions regarding policies, social funding security system and institutional construction in consideration of the sustainable development of Gannan. As the chief editor, Lozang Nyingchi Dorje divided this book into 14 chapters. The book (ISBN of 7-5424-0974-3) costs 40 Yuan. It was published by Gansu Sciences and Technology Press.


      The Relationship between the Social, Political, and Religious in Labrang Monastery

      Labrang Monastery was built in 1709. Gannan is steeped in history and enriched with culture and abundant resources, such as the extensive grassland, thick forest, plenty of water resource, affluent minerals, and a splendid landscape, relics, and Buddhist monasteries. All of these are clearly illustrated by the authors in this book, accompanied with fascinating pictures and simple text.
